Hachette Children’s Books and Tesco for Schools & Clubs launch joint initiative 16/05/2011

Hachette Children’s Books are delighted to announce their involvement with the Tesco for Schools & Clubs programme. For the past 20 years  schools and clubs have been collecting vouchers for new equipment and this year, in collaboration with Hachette Children’s Books, Tesco is introducing book packs to the catalogue.

The packs have been devised by Hachette Children’s Books and will include a variety of titles from Hodder Children’s Books, Orchard Books and sister company Orion. The packs will range in value from £10 - £200, across a variety of themes and ability levels and will be available from the Tesco for Schools & Clubs website – www.tescoforschoolsandclubs.co.uk

Giles Andreae will be championing the scheme in his role as Ambassador and will be launching the campaign with Nick Gibb, Minister of State for Schools on 10th May, alerting schools and clubs to the addition of books for the first time.

I am delighted to be involved with the introduction of books for the first time to the Tesco for Schools & Clubs programme.  The packs deliver a wide range of great books that children will want to read and share.  I strongly believe that books within the school environment need to appeal to today’s children and that the foundations of enjoying reading spring from having access to a range of books – from the gross, through to the gruesome, to the slapstick funny.  It’s all about enjoyment and finding the right book to engage every child.’ – Giles Andreae

Lucy Neville-Rolfe Executive Director, Tesco, said: “Over the past two decades the Tesco for Schools & Clubs programme has given away over £170m worth of amazing equipment for schools.  I know from reading with my own four children, the importance of reading and the enjoyment that can be gained from children’s books.  The addition of books to the scheme provides a unique opportunity for children to develop a love of reading.”

Minister of State for Schools, Nick Gibb, said: "As well as ensuring all children learn to read effectively and fluently early on in their school careers, the Government also wants to develop a stronger culture of reading for pleasure in England's schools.

“It's fantastic that Tesco is helping to make books available in schools.  Nurturing a love of reading in our children will help open them up to a world of opportunities and enjoyment. Learning to read is a fundamental part of a child’s education. I welcome the support that Tesco and this scheme will be able to offer in helping all children to enjoy a lifetime’s love of reading and books
